About the Journal
Mission
The Kiru journal aims to disseminate scientific knowledge in the fields of dentistry and public health through the publication of high-quality research articles developed by national and international authors.
Focus and Scope
Kiru is a peer-reviewed, open-access scientific journal specialized in the field of dentistry, published quarterly by the Faculty of Dentistry at the Universidad de San Martín de Porres (USMP), Lima, Peru.
Its objective is to publish and promote scientific production in the areas of dentistry, oral public health, and university teaching, with the purpose of contributing to the promotion of oral health, as well as the prevention, recovery, and rehabilitation of patients affected by diseases of the stomatognathic system. The journal is intended for the dental community and health professionals in general.
It receives original and unpublished contributions such as: original research articles, review articles, clinical case reports, opinion papers, and letters to the editor, developed by professionals and students from this institution as well as by health science researchers from other national and international institutions.
Editorial Process
Initial Editorial Review.
Manuscripts are first evaluated by the Editorial Committee to verify compliance with the Instructions for Authors, the journal’s objectives, research ethics standards, and overall contribution and relevance to the field. If approved, the manuscript is screened using Turnitin plagiarism detection software. Articles showing a similarity index of 20% or less continue in the review process; otherwise, they are returned to the authors. Approved manuscripts proceed to peer review.
Peer Review.
Manuscripts that pass the initial editorial evaluation are submitted for review by academic peers (specialists), national and international experts in the subject matter, external to the institution and with prior publication experience. The process follows a single-blind peer review model, in which reviewers’ identities are concealed from the authors. Reviewers participate on an ad honorem basis. In case of disagreement between reviewers, an additional opinion from an independent referee is requested. Each manuscript is reviewed by at least two experts.
Review Outcome.
Reviewers may classify the manuscript as:
- a) Accepted for publication without modifications;
- b) Accepted for publication with minor revisions suggested by the reviewers;
- c) Accepted for publication subject to major revisions; or
- d) Not recommended for publication.
Based on the reviewers’ recommendations, the Editorial Committee decides whether the article will be published. Manuscripts requiring corrections are returned to authors for revision. Articles not accepted are returned to the authors.
Authors have two weeks to resubmit the revised version of their manuscripts to the Editorial Committee. After verification of the corrections, the article is sent to the copyeditor, translator, layout designer, and finally to publication. A reminder is sent to authors who do not respond within the established period. If no response is received within 45 days, the article will be excluded from publication in that issue.
Only approved manuscripts proceed to the publication stage.
The estimated time from submission to publication ranges from 2 to 5 months.
Before the final version is uploaded to the OJS platform, a proof version is sent to the corresponding author for final approval.
Once submitted, no additional authors can be added during the editorial process.
Evaluation Forms
Evaluation forms outline the criteria used to determine whether a submission is suitable for publication. A specific form exists for each article type.
To access them, authors or reviewers must register on the platform at:

Ethics and Malpractice Statement
Ethical Aspects
Kiru is committed to scientific integrity throughout the research and publication process. The journal adheres to the international ethical standards and best practices established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) [http://publicationethics.org/] and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) [http://www.icmje.org/], as well as to national regulations governing research and scientific publication in Peru.
Authors submitting manuscripts to Kiru must comply with ethical principles for research involving human subjects, as outlined in international guidelines such as the Declaration of Helsinki, the Belmont Report, and the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS) guidelines.
Manuscripts must demonstrate compliance with these principles to minimize research-related risks. This will be evaluated by the Editorial Committee and peer reviewers. Accordingly, all studies involving human subjects must have been approved by a recognized Research Ethics Committee and must include a statement confirming informed consent from participants.
Clinical trials (CTs) must be registered in a publicly accessible database. For studies conducted in Peru, registration is required in the Peruvian Clinical Trials Registry (REPEC): https://ensayosclinicos-repec.ins.gob.pe/
For studies conducted in other countries, registration must be completed in the International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP): https://trialsearch.who.int/
If a trial was not registered, or registration occurred after initiation, an explanation must be provided.
Studies involving animals must have prior approval from an Animal Experimentation Ethics Committee, specifying the institution and country of origin.
Kiru adheres to the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA): https://sfdora.org/read/
Authorship Declaration
Authors must declare that their manuscripts have not been submitted previously or simultaneously to another journal, and that they are free of fraud, plagiarism, and conflicts of interest.
All opinions expressed in published articles are the sole responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the journal, unless explicitly stated otherwise.
All authors must meet the authorship criteria of the ICMJE, which include:
Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data.
Drafting or critically revising the work for important intellectual content.
Final approval of the version to be published.
Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work.
All authors and co-authors must be listed in the manuscript submission. Individuals who do not meet authorship criteria should be acknowledged appropriately.
Conflicts of Interest and Funding Sources
Conflict of Interest:
A conflict of interest exists when an author has financial or personal relationships that could inappropriately influence (bias) their work. This must be declared in Kiru’s “Declaration of Originality and Ethical Considerations,” which should accompany the manuscript.
Funding Sources:
If the study received financial support, this must be disclosed using the ICMJE Disclosure of Interest Form, available at https://www.icmje.org/disclosure-of-interest/, and attached upon submission.
Originality Statement
Kiru evaluates the originality of each manuscript using Turnitin, allowing a maximum similarity index of 20%, excluding references and sources under 20 words. In cases of suspected plagiarism, actions will follow the recommendations of COPE.
If plagiarism is detected after publication, the journal reserves the right to retract the article. All reported cases of misconduct will be investigated following due process.
Guidelines for Complete and Transparent Reporting
Authors are encouraged to follow the EQUATOR Network guidelines (https://www.equator-network.org/) to ensure that reports are clear, comprehensive, and transparent. Examples include:
CONSORT for randomized clinical trials,
STROBE for observational epidemiological studies,
PRISMA for systematic reviews and meta-analyses,
CARE for clinical case reports, among others.
Manuscripts must cite and reference all data, code, and materials used or generated in the research.
Permissions
Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to partially reproduce material (text, tables, or figures) from other publications. Such permissions must be obtained from both the copyright holder and the publisher, as well as from the institution that funded the original work. Copies of these permissions must be included upon manuscript submission.
Authors must also include a declaration stating that the content is original, has not been previously published, and is not under consideration elsewhere in whole or in part. Failure to disclose this information constitutes a serious breach of scientific ethics.
Manuscripts must be original; Kiru reserves the right to reject any paper found to contain plagiarized material without appropriate authorization.
If ethical violations are identified in studies involving humans or animals, or in the preparation or submission of a manuscript, the article will not be published, and actions will follow COPE recommendations [http://publicationethics.org/].
