Abstract

Periodontitis is a highly prevalent, multifactorial, chronic inflammatory disease that destroys tooth-supporting tissues and is associated with various systemic comorbidities. Recently, a link has been proposed between periodontal inflammation and neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease (PD), driven by shared pathophysiological and inflammatory mechanisms. The aim of this review was to analyze the available scientific evidence regarding the association between periodontitis and PD in older adults. A literature review was conducted using the PubMed and SciELO databases. Clinical trials, observational studies, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses published between 2020 and 2025 in English and Spanish were included, using the search terms "periodontal diseases" and "Parkinson". Out of 363 identified articles, 31 relevant studies were selected. Most studies reported an increased risk or prevalence of PD in patients with periodontitis, demonstrating statistically significant associations, albeit with methodological heterogeneity. Current evidence suggests a close relationship between both pathologies, primarily mediated by chronic inflammation and microbial imbalances (dysbiosis).
