“Scientific Inactivity Among Peruvian Women Researchers: An Examination of Its Academic and Institutional Determinants”

Abstract

Scientific inactivity represents a major challenge in the academic careers of female researchers, as it limits continuity, impact, and the consolidation of national research systems. The aim of this study was to identify academic and institutional determinants associated with scientific inactivity among Peruvian women researchers. We conducted an observational, analytical, cross-sectional, and retrospective study in Peru. The study population included women researchers with valid RENACYT registration between 2018 and 2024. From a total of 2,962 eligible researchers, a sample size of 337 was calculated using the finite population formula, with 95% confidence and 5% margin of error. Participants were selected through systematic random sampling with proportional quotas by year of registration. The dependent variable was scientific inactivity, defined as the absence of scientific publications or book publications in CTI Vitae during 2022, 2023, and 2024. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify associated factors.
Among the 337 researchers analyzed, 10.08% presented scientific inactivity. In multivariate analysis, inactivity was significantly associated with having accumulated more than 10 total publications, being classified in RENACYT levels V, VI, or VII, and having more than five years of permanence in the registry. Conversely, affiliation with non-university institutions, such as institutes or hospitals, was significantly associated with reduced inactivity.
Scientific inactivity among Peruvian women researchers is determined by academic and institutional factors. These findings highlight the need for policies aimed at fostering continuity and sustainability of women’s scientific production in the country.
