Microbiological analysis of instrumental used in dental restoration Student perceptions of virtual and in-person teaching modalities in Oral and Maxillofacial Histology: a qualitative study

Objectives: This study focuses on understanding student perceptions regarding the teaching of histology through videoconferencing (Zoom) and post-pandemic in-person educational activities during the first year at a Faculty of Dentistry. Materials and Methods: A qualitative case study was conducted with students enrolled in the first-year Oral and Maxillofacial Histology course at the Faculty of Dentistry of the Universidad de la República (Udelar). Focus groups were used to collect participant data, and discourse analysis was employed as the analytical strategy. Results: Three categories were analyzed: psychosocial aspects, didactic aspects, and the teacher-student bond. A total of 13 students participated, divided into 3 groups. This analysis revealed various elements that provided a comprehensive understanding of how students perceive the differences between both learning modalities. Conclusions: It was concluded that platform-mediated virtual teaching modalities and in-person activities should not be conceived as mutually exclusive, but rather as potentially complementary instances within the educational process. The findings confirmed that training components such as practical learning sessions and social interactions between students and teachers are strengthened by in-person attendance. Conversely, remaining at home within the family environment is valued in virtual modalities. Further research must be pursued to delve deeper into different teaching modalities and student perceptions of each.
